Multiple CO Transitions, CI, and HCN from the Cloverleaf Quasar

چکیده
New millimeter-wavelength emission lines are reported for the Cloverleaf (H1413+117), a gravitationally lensed quasar at redshift 2.56. High signal-to-noise ratio spectra of four lines in CO (J = 3 → 2, 4 → 3, 5 → 4, and 7 → 6) have been obtained and are modelled using an escape probability formalism. The line brightness temperatures are flat or rising between CO(3 → 2) and CO(4 → 3) and then drop to the CO(5 → 4) and CO(7 → 6) lines; this falloff suggests that the optical depths in the CO lines are modest (τ4−3 ∼< 3), and that the gas is relatively warm (T > ∼ 100 K) and dense (nH2 > ∼ 3× 10 3 cm−3). The neutral carbon fine structure line CI(P1 → P0) was detected with moderate SNR on two separate occasions, and appears secure. The HCN(4 → 3) line is somewhat more tentative, as it was observed only once and detected with moderate SNR. However, its brightness ratio relative to the CO(4 → 3) line, L(HCN)/L(CO) ≈ 0.25, is very similar to the ratio seen in luminous infrared galaxies. This probably reflects the gas fraction maintained at high densities by radiation pressure from the active nucleus; alternatively, the HCN transition may be excited through absorption of infrared radiation at 14μm. The detectability of the Cloverleaf in molecular and neutral atomic transitions is largely due to high emissivity of the gas and magnification from gravitational lensing, rather than an extremely large mass of gas. Detection of Emission from the Cn Radical in the Cloverleaf Quasar at Z=2.56
We report the detection of CN(N=3→2) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) based on observations with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. This is the first clear detection of emission from this radical at high redshift. CN emission is a tracer of dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) > 10 4 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds, in particular in regions where the clouds are af...

The study of molecular gas in quasar host galaxies addresses a number of interesting questions pertaining to the hosts' ISM, to unified schemes relating quasars and IR galaxies, and to the processes fueling nuclear activity. In this contribution I review observations of molecular gas in quasar hosts from z = 0.06 to z = 4.7. The Cloverleaf quasar at z = 2.5 is featured as a case where there are...
متن کاملFirst Detection of Hco Emission at High Redshift
We report the detection of HCO(J=1→0) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) through observations with the Very Large Array. This is the first detection of ionized molecular gas emission at high redshift (z > 2). HCO emission is a star formation indicator similar to HCN, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) ≃ 10 5 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds. We derive a lensing–c...
متن کاملThe Molecular Disk in the Cloverleaf Quasar
We propose a new interpretation for the CO emitting region of the Cloverleaf (H1413+1143), a gravitationally lensed QSO. We proceed by fitting a two-galaxy lensing model directly to the IRAM CO(7-6) data rather than to the optical HST image. From the fit we infer that the CO source might be a disk-like structure with a characteristic radius R ≥ 790 pc, a value similar to that of the CO emitting...
متن کاملGas and Dust in the Cloverleaf Quasar at Redshift 2.5
We observed the upper fine structure line of neutral carbon, C I(P2 →P1) (νrest = 809 GHz), the 12CO(J=3→2) line (νrest = 345 GHz) and the 1.2 mm continuum emission from H1413+117 (Cloverleaf quasar, z = 2.5) using the IRAM interferometer. Together with the detection of the lower fine structure line (Barvainis et al. 1997), the Cloverleaf quasar is now only the second extragalactic system, besi...
